COURSE DETAILS:

This course will cover water rescue skills needed for Surface Water Rescue, Rescue Boat,and Personal Water Craft requirements Level 1 and Level 2 as per NFPA Section 1006 Technical Rescuer Qualifications that meets NFPA standards.

This course provides the skills needed to operate a rescue/patrol boat and perform rescues in bays, harbors, ports, and the open ocean. Safety, course philosophy, water rescue terminology are covered as well as boat handling skills. “In water” experiences for students include how to read currents, understanding tidal flow, how to operate a boat safely around obstacles and in traffic. ther items covered are deploying rescue swimmers, communications, towing, and re-righting capsized boats. Also included are methods for setting up boats for maximum efficiency, along with executing pre/post-inspections of the rescue boat.

Open Water Rescuer Basic

Course Objectives

This course provides detailed information, and the skills training required, to improve an individual’s level of comfort and confidence for safely performing

contact rescues in static and surface water conditions. Safety is strongly emphasized.

Risk management is reinforced during every skill to establish your

level of comfort in the water and to identify and overcome your limitations.

Prerequisite

It is recommended that the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) devise or adopt a minimum swim capability standard based on the response area needs. A realistic evaluation of the rescuer’s water survival skills should be conducted by the AHJ to meet this requirement. It isrecommended that the AHJ use an annual swim test standard that meets or exceeds the

International Association of Dive Rescue Specialists (IADRS) Annual Watermanship Test

Open Water Rescue Boat Operations-Small Vessel

COURSE DETAILS:

This course provides classroom instruction and practical application to develop competency for open water rescue boat operations. The course is designed specifically for open water environments and is not appropriate for environments with river and flood or surf environments. Upon completion, the student will be capable of operating small rescue boats (recommended length up to 18 feet or operational equivalent).

COURSE DETAILS:

Topics include dynamic hydrology, recognizing and isolating hazards to rescuers and victims; managing a water rescue incident incident size up and communication; working with air assets and watercraft; selecting and using PPE and rescue equipment; searching for and managing victims; constructing and using technical rope rescue systems and skills; dynamic swimming.
performing non-entry rescues from the shore; and terminating an incident.
This course incorporates awareness and operations training based on NFPA 1006 (2021).
